FAQS

Is this a soup?
No, it really is a stew. By definition, a stew contains ingredients "stewed" in just enough liquid to be simmered for a period of time. It tends to be heartier than a soup. Whereas soup is primarily liquid, such as stock, combined with other ingredients such as vegetables or meat.

No meat... why so much protein?
Beans are protein-packed powerhouses. This is why each serving of our Kale and White Bean Stew contains 16g of protein, or 32g for an entire double serving. Not only that, but when you add potatoes and beans together, they form what is known as a complete protein, allowing a vegan dish to have the essential amino acids found in animal protein.

Kale

Kale

Kale is considered one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, making it a bonafide superfood. Kale's list of health benefits is lengthy, and in our opinion, it's equally as tasty.

First time with this meal

I've been getting G to G meals for many years. Some are amongst my favorites from any manufacturer—Three-bean Chili, Thai Curry for example. As someone who eats no meat except for fish, and no dairy, the options for dehydrated meals is a bit limited. I had been meaning to try the Kale and Bean Stew for a while, and finally got around to it.

I think the flavor of this is fine. Mild yet tasty, and a bit savory, there is some depth to the seasoning mix. I jazzed it up a bit with some tomato paste and a couple of grinder turns of black pepper. As i usually do with most dehydrated meals, i simmer for about half the recommended dehydration time, then let it sit for the remainder of time, plus another 25% of so. Here and there, there was a slightly hard bean, but overall, things were expectedly soft.

The problem, and enough to not make me want to get this again, is that in pretty much every spoonful, there were stringy and/or tough bits of green stuff (presumably kale stems), that were pretty much inedible. This is the only G to G meal i've had this issue with. As a one-time, long-time gardener, i know that there are kale varieties that don't have as much of an issue with tough bits, but it appears this kale isn't that type. The "best by" date is just shy of a year out.

Tasty. Good and healthy. Good for my finicky gut, which tends to get out of sorts on multi day treks. This meal mitigates rather than aggravates the gut disruption. For me it is a staple.

Great tasting!

I have purchased and eaten all kinds of dehydrated and freeze dried food over my 40+ years of backpacking and the Good to Go meals are the best I've had. The Kale and White Bean Stew is hardy, rehydrates perfectly, and has a little spice to make it a go to meal and one that I make sure to bring on every trip. I sometimes save it for the last meal of the trip as kind of a reward :) Keep up the good work!
